It is considered “bad form” to log a find on your own cache, no matter when you do it. The same is true if you re-visit another traditional cache (for example to place or retrieve a travel bug). Use the “post a note” log option to record your visit in these circumstances.
In either case, you’re not “finding” a cache because you already know where it is. Save the smiley face for use when you’ve truly discovered a hidden cache.
No, not for a ‘proper’ cache, but now about logging an “attended” on your own event – assuming, of course, that you actually did attend? Seems to be normal to do that here in the West Midlands . . . then again, events themselves are a bit of a fudge in that the only connection with geocaching is that they have a logbook.
I don’t think one should “Find” ones own caches – or log the same cache twice. It shouldn’t be beyond the capabilities of Groundspeak to make it impossible to be able to do either of these – after all they’ve made it impossible to give a favourite to your own cache or to an event.
Events are somewhat different as you “Attend” an Event you don’t “Find” it
Logging our own caches….never. If your that desperate for extra numbers why not go the whole hog and just lie (couldn’t sign the log as too much traffic (in a very very quiet lane))…I have found some that do! or do as some people do and log a find “because I was there but couldn’t find it”
There’s one cacher in this region that logs as a find but says can’t remember when they found it. As it happens I once replaced the log of one they had claimed and after I’d dried the old one out I couldn’t see their name anywhere. Nothing to say they hadn’t done it, perhaps in a far-previous logsheet (at least a year in that case!), but seems a strange way to play the game. No skin off my nose though, if they want to do it that way!
Congratulations to Station Master. After some good humoured banter at the Leaping on the Green event, Mark has deleted the offending logs to come in line with the commonly accepted principle on this topic.
I find it rather strange that people check on other peoples finds. This is a game not a test. I wonder who looked at my profile and found out, I know there would be other ways to discover, like watching a cache. But must admit some people do take this fun hobby a little to serious. But it does give us something to talk about. I enjoyed be told off at the event recently.
Mark, this topic wasn’t started to point a finger at you, but was already in existence. I get notified of all archived caches (so that I can create the end of year stats) and I noticed that you logged a find every time you archived a cache. I thought this was a very strange practice worthy of note 🙂
Of course it’s a game, but every game has it’s rules and geocaching seems to be a particularly competitive game, so it’s important that everybody plays by the same rules.
I think most people find the statistics really interesting which is why they used to get them put on their profile, but now, of course, it’s all done automatically. I hope to produce an even more complete set of stats at the end of 2012, it will be interesting to see how it compares with 2011, but already we seem to be getting many more caches placed (and presumably found).
Oh I am disappointed now Dave, I thought I had started it off and made me smile, but most things with GC makes me smile unless I step in some dogs mess whilst getting a cache or come accross something worse.
You wouldn’t be referring to “cat litter, cans, fag packets, a condom and plenty more” by any chance 🙂
I often look at archived caches to see what problem has befallen them.
Sometimes it’s ones we’ve previously found and I think “What a shame. I wonder what happened to that?” or “I’m not surprised that one’s gone”.
Other times it’s ones we’ve not found and I think “That one didn’t last long. I wonder why?”.
So although not specifically checking up on anybody one does notice things!
