Like others have said the biggest shame is when quality caches become archived when they are still popular. In fact a cache I had my eye on for sometime ( not on dartmoor ) has just been archived. Look! … GC1782Z

I’m confused. What does the coin have to do with archiving a series? Seems quite harsh. Have you thought about putting the series up for adoption rather than archiving?
£3 postage seems fair to me. Padded Envelope £0.70-£1.00; Postage £1.50 then petrol to drive to the post office.
People will only buy or bid on ebay if they want to buy the item. If they don’t agree with the cost they don’t have to buy.
We all know that on ebay if it says free postage that they just list the item for a higher price in the first place.

So at the end is there a container? I get the impression that you are as intrigued as I am Dave. I think you need to give it a go! I would but my leg is still in plaster! I’m looking forward to trying this as soon as I’m back on my feet.

I think I’ve downloaded the wherigo cartridge to the wherigo app on my phone. I’ve added some screen shots from my phone. Can someone explain how a wherigo works. Will the cartridge tell me where to go? What’s with the sausages and other items. Has anyone done this wherigo near hound tor?

I’ve got scrarpa leather boots from GO Outdoors. Always keep me dry. I am curious about the wellingtons. If the ground is boggy is there not a risk of putting your foot down then bringing it up minus the wellie? Do they always stay on?

I did a multi once that required getting various dates off plaques and statues. I couldn’t get to one of the plaques due to it being cordoned off at the time. This was to get the last remaining number I needed. I put all the numbers into geocheck bar the last one. I then went through all the numbers starting with zero. As I recall I think the number I needed was 9! At least I was there and got all the other numbers fair and square. I think this was a fair attempt given the circumstances.

Agree Dave. Wonderful wealth of information which would make a wonderful book. Such an amazing body of work but it’s a nightmare finding what you want. I was just looking at the site and stumbled across this. It seems like a great tale but like you said he’s not referenced it. There is nothing else on the web I have seen on it.

Simply out of curiosity does anyone remember this event in 2010? I don’t recall reading anything about it at the time and i can’t find any further info on it.

I found information on the fish stone. Go to google. Type in legendary dartmoor then dartmoor rock idols. It tells you a little about it and roughly where it is.

How much longer are the wilsworthy caches going to be available for? I’d really like to find them. Is there a deadline?

Very well put muddy puddles. I think part of the problem is the reviewers are too busy. They probably work. They probably cache and they probably have too big an area to act as reviewers for. Someone locally and I mean in the general area of Dartmoor needs to become a reviewer for ground speak. They need to grant all caches within the national park!

I feel very sorry for clownpunchers. The whole thing stinks. We should have a vote of no confidence in the gagb and Lindinis and graculus. We need reviewers and representatives with a backbone and some common sense. Not clueless buffoons.

It’s gone a bit quiet on this topic recently. What’s the current state of affairs? Any new developments? Are new caches permitted/likely to be permitted on the mod areas of the moor soon?

My opinion of open caching is that it has jumped on the bandwagon just like munzee. Geocaching is successful because it is beyond just finding the box it’s the whole experience.
It’s about reading the logs before you visit. Writing your log after you visit. Uploading a photo. Finding a TB. Comparing stats. Checking visitor numbers. Geocaching is global. I know I could visit a cache in most of the worlds travel destinations. Can the same be said for open caching?

I will stay with geocaching because it gives me everything I need. It is a well oiled machine.

You have just turned a debate, a conversation about geocaching on dartmoor into a attack. I don’t appreciate you calling my comments ridiculous. You’ve just shown your true colours on this forum. I’m not talking about a few boxes here. It goes deeper than that. This is about the rights of people who use the moors.
It’s great that you are off to find letter boxes in the ‘wet’. But don’t always assume you will have that privilege forever.
We need to stand united letterboxers and geocachers.
I spent 8 years in the Army and have trained regularly on Dartmoor. I’ve always seen Dartmoor as a place to be shared by the public and the military. That mutual understanding needs to continue.

What are you saying Plymbridge runner? You don’t agree with containers Letterbox or Geocache placed inside the military areas of Dartmoor. This has happened for years with no problems. A terrorist group would not even consider walking out onto the moor in mainly wet conditions to place a device which at worst take out a few sheep.

I’d love to know what the trigger was for this decision by the MOD. Why now? What is the reason. Is it possible there is someone inside the MOD that is anti Geocaching? If so Why?
It’s devastating news. You have so many great caches out on the moors Dave. I hope this can be overturned at least on Dartmoor as a special case. I can understand the idea of Tupperware outside a military base being a no no. Such as the controlled explosion outside HMS Drake this week, but that is not a concern on the moors. Geocaching doesn’t interfere with The military, nature or history.

This is terrible news. Dartmoor is one of Britain’s last proper wilderness’ . It’s bad enough that the north moors aren’t accessible every day. Now this!!? Maybe it’s a secret government plot to drive people off the moors and make it even more military. The government have done it before. Look at Tyneham in Dorset. There’s a village on Salisbury plain where they moved everyone out too. In the 70’s they moved a whole community off Diego Garcia island to turn it into a military base. There are no inhabitants on the north moor so if the govt/mod wanted to they could probably ban walkers completely. This could be the first step. Watch out letter boxers….

Firstly I would like to apologise to qrang. I visited the aforementioned cache today. Now I know what is involved I can totally understand how it may be difficult to sign.

In keeping with this topic I had 2 DNF’ s today taking my total to 4 DNF’ s this week.

Dave in answer to your question….YES!

I reiterate what i’ve said before. If I hadn’t found a cache due to it being well hidden or muggled. Why would you want to ask the co to log it? I’ve lost count of the number of walks I’ve done and not found a cache. That’s part of the game. There’s always another day. Another opportunity to find the difficult ones.

Remote caches are great. There is more of a sense of achievement if you have walked 2, 3 or 4 miles to get some caches rather than an urban cache. Each to their own but I often leave TB’s in remote caches. I see it as a little prize for the next cacher that has made the effort to walk a bit of a distance.
It pains me to see the latest series on Bodmin Moor tonight. 60 plus ‘drive by’ caches on the moor. (Sarcasticly) That’s just what an area of outstanding beauty needs. Roadside caches all over it. More cars, more pollution, more livestock potentially getting injured or killed! Why??

Well, well, well! Update on the saga involving one of my caches; a nomads retreat. If you don’t know the background please read my previous posts on here.

I went to the cache to check if it was there. It was. In exactly the spot it should be in! The 15 people who have so far found my cache have had no problems with the coords etc.

‘Pebbles and co’ wanted to log this cache without having found it!

It seems to me she travelled from Wiltshire and had set herself a target of x amount of caches in an area. She had already decided that every cache attempted would be a cache found. A smiley. But, that was Not to be. So in a lame attempt to cheat she asked if she could log it without finding it.

She even told me in her log AND an email that she had recently broken her wrist.

The cache is not difficult but is not a piece of cake. You do need a degree of fitness. But this IS reflected in the terrain rating.

I’m glad I stuck to my guns. My standards of caching are obviously not as high as a tiny minority.

I like to take in the views, the smells, the wildlife, enjoy the company of my dog and get some nice good quality caches. Anything between 5 and 20 is just fine for me on a days walking. Each to their own. I have no desire to do 100 caches in a day. It might bump my tally up but when I sit back to reflect on those caches found I reckon my memories would be just one big blur.

I was introduced by my friend and fellow Paramedic Betsys beagles. I was aware of his letterboxing past. But had not heard of Geocaching. We were working together on the Hoe on the day of the Olympic Torch Relay when he mentioned he had just purchased a GPS.
He asked me if I’d heard of geocaching ( I hadn’t) the next day a quick google search and I was hooked after walking 500 metres from my front door and bagging my first cache.
The whole hobby is a joy. I have a 1 year old whippet so the walking possibilities are endless.
My wife and children love it too.

I have a genuine love of Dartmoor now. I was in the army from 16-23 and my feeling of Dartmoor for many years was a place I remember being very cold, very tired and Hungry for days on end. Walking the moors at night. Not appreciating the landscape at all.
    My whole perception has changed.

    Thanks Geocaching!

What would have happened if there was a TB in the unfound (found) cache. Maybe she could have pretended to move it on by contacting the TB owner to get the tracking number!

Well I just got an email. The cacher said she felt frightened when stood at GZ!? Had to get away quick ( the cows maybe?? ). She said she lives 170 miles away and cache owners normally allow found it logs when the cache may be Muggled. Do they??!
I still don’t get this woman’s conscious. She is actually saying that she wants to log a cache she has NOT found.
I find that very strange. I might log about 20 caches in a minute that I haven’t found in the last 12 months that will make me feel awesome. ( joke)

Help me out here guys. I’m not being unreasonable am I?!

I hope that wasn’t too harsh. Not a big fan of cheating. Makes me wonder how many of his caches are genuine finds.

    I’ve emailed the cacher:

” Thanks for your enquiry. I’m sorry that you didn’t find my cache. Why would you want to log a cache that you didn’t find? That would be cheating. I understand that the cows, the gorse and your broken wrist caused you problems but this is reflected in the terrain difficulty of the cache.
Its like saying If I went to a cache that was in a cave but when I arrived at the cave realised I didn’t have a torch so just stood at the entrance. Then went home and logged it.
That would be wrong. I would not have found the cache and experienced the cave.

I will be going out to check the cache in the next few days. I hope you have better luck if you attempt the cache in the future.”

I need to throw something out to you lovely people on here. I’ve had a DNF on one of my caches ‘A Nomads Retreat’ (between Hemerdon and Lee Moor). The DNF can be viewed by anyone.
The nature of the DNF was Cows in the way…Lots of Gorse… Recent broken wrist which meant could only search with a stick.
He/she ended the DNF with ‘I think I should be able to log it anyway, could you let me know?’

    WHAT??!

How can you even contemplate logging a cache without finding it?!
That’s like saying well I saw the cache on the island in the middle of the stream so I logged it or I saw the cache in the tree but couldn’t get to it so i logged it or logging a cache in a cave without going in the cave!
I really don’t know how to respond. I’m actually shocked. Any ideas??!

I’ve walked miles before and not found a cache but I can honestly honestly say I wouldn’t dream of logging it.
