GoldenHaystackParticipant
I missed “The Living World – Ouzels of the Moor”, broadcast on Radio 4, 6:35am, Sun 12 Aug 2012. However, I see it’s still on the BBC i-player. GH.
GoldenHaystackParticipantI only did part of the Parramble in one attempt to qualify for the ‘100 in a day challenge’. I divided my effort into three sections that would otherwise have been completed on three seperate days. With all due respect to Kev and Chris, the hides are not difficult to find but at times are amusing. Definitely family fun. On my own, I managed a cache every six minutes for 10 hours. Fiddling to open and close the plastic wallet seals was a chore! I’m pleased you managed to have time to enjoy the views which range from Dartmoor to South Wales. Logging was also done in three sesions. I think I wrote something different regarding each cache and, of course, Greasemonkey helps with the signature, etc..
Sorry about the cow dung! It happens!! GH.
GoldenHaystackParticipantWell done Dartymoor. Good to see you up north!
I can recommend the Parramble loops (No 1 being GC350WP) to anyone attempting the challenge of 100+ caches in a single day. I notice someone managed the 150 in a day a couple of weeks ago. The Parramble is one of two sets of over 100 caches each set out by Kevham1 and CeeKay1. Together they have over 400 active caches – amazing.
GoldenHaystackParticipantWell, I suppose it has to be about numbers. As I said I enjoy a challenge. I’ve recently been collecting caches in order to qualify for four challenges with time limits on them that have involved bagging about 130 caches in all. So that has bumped my numbers up in a relatively short time. GH.
P.S. Dave. Regarding the off topic subject, I’ve tried as hard as I can, but I just can’t get the words ‘master’ and ‘station’ as an anagram of GoldenHaystack!!!GoldenHaystackParticipantTrue —- but I bet they’ve got a terrific coin collection!!!! GH.
GoldenHaystackParticipantBut you are all putting forward your own formulae which immediately rates other people’s caching ability or aims from your perspective. Yes, I enjoy numbers, as I imagine many cachers do, but I’m not particularly interested in ranking myself against others. I have (at last) found a hobby which seems to satisfy and challenge me in several ways. GH.
GoldenHaystackParticipantStatistics can be read in many ways. The average human has one breast and one testicle. Cachers are many and various, some cache in teams or pairs, some cache alone. Some of us even cache and hide under two or more names! GH.
GoldenHaystackParticipantGroundspeak’s definition of fun clearly doesn’t involve using your brains or ingenuity. GH.
GoldenHaystackParticipantActually I agree with you, Dave. I just threw in the idea. Groundspeak seems to have triumphed where others have lingered behind. So if we want to use their successful system and can’t lobby them otherwise we have to put up with their rules. Having said that, I also understand as Hobo has just said, that it is important as to how your cache application is worded for it to be approved.
GoldenHaystackParticipantAre you up to a challenge Dave?
“I challenge you to develop this website to have its own Dartmoor caches and systems for logging them.”
The Dartmoor Caching Team could then set its own rules. Of course, as a North Devonian I wouldn’t expect a vote! GH.- This reply was modified 12 years, 6 months ago by GoldenHaystack.
GoldenHaystackParticipantThanks for all the info…….. Shame it doesn’t fly the Union Jack.
Beep. “Hello from Orange. You’ve topped up by £20 so your phone fund now stands at £11:63. Offset this against a new smart phone at the Orange Shop”.
Oh dear! Not enough munzee yet to get on the Munzee scene!GoldenHaystackParticipantAs some of you will know, I’m also not particularly a stickler for observing rules of any kind! GH.
GoldenHaystackParticipantMmmmm….
O yes, I B yer, can’t C where U B 2!GoldenHaystackParticipantI have used Firefox and about 3 userscripts on Geocaching.com since I can’t remember when. They don’t seem to clash with each other. Very useful to get the webpage how you like it. GC little helper is good.
For puzzles and multi’s where one has changed the coordinates it shows them corrected on the links For online maps…. but I’m not sure which, if any of the scripts does that.
There are also greasemonkey userscripts for other sites to remove adverts, show all logs, etc., etc..
They cannot all be trusted, so take care what you download. GH.GoldenHaystackParticipantYes, the userscript 109145 works well in firefox. Can’t beat the good old OS maps. GH.
GoldenHaystackParticipantYes, there is a long series of about 109 and another with several loops of about 150 in total both not far from me. I often think ( usually when driving home after a long day caching) about how I’m going to log them when I eventually get round to attempting them. I also feel obliged to have a go as I know and respect the two who have worked so hard to lay them out and then maintain them and all their other caches. (open feindish voice) There must be some way to make the log entries interesting. (close feindish voice).
Regards GH.GoldenHaystackParticipantI write my logs as I feel about a cache. So if the cache is boring litter as many now are, it deserves the log entry it gets. If there is a maintenance issue I always say. I nearly always put in a poem or song lyric that I think is relevent to the cache in some way to make the cache owner’s mail a little more interesting. It’s very sad a cache owner felt they needed to add a ‘Logging Etiquette’ clause to the cache page. Maybe he/she should consider making their caches more deserving of a good log entry, it works both ways. Of course, one has to remember that the interweb is an open door and anyone can come in, there are plenty in the world who have not been taught to respect the efforts of others. Just relax and take it as it comes. GH.
