Westwoods 2Blocked
Well done Dave,it would have been a great shame to see Dartmoor disappear off the Geocaching map even if WE don’t get there very often these days. Going to Fur Tor on New Year’s Day seems another life! Maybe one last foray onto Cut Hill in the better weather!!!
Westwoods 2BlockedWhilst it is flattering to be mentioned in dispatches by none other than the Great Bogtrotter I do feel that there are people better qualified to take on this task!
Many years ago in the days when Godfrey was chief letterboxer and checked most boxes himself I was involved in setting up guidelines and agreements with the DNPA and Letterboxers, but things were much simpler in those days with far fewer people involved and only within (by and large) the confines of Dartmoor and most letterboxers were local. From memory there was far more internal control exercised than with the Geocaching community and problems with sites were quickly sorted.
Even so there were problems(lists of “Secret” boxes and the “Cut Hill Mafia” spring to mind )I’m sure the Urban Ranger will remember them!
With geocaching as long as the guidelines are followed the reviewer will allow the cache without physically seeing the site, and I have certainly seen some placements that would not have existed as letterboxes (walls are a particular gripe for me).
With this thought in mind it would be interesting to know the reasons for the change by DNPA-there has to be a reason!
We don’t get out on the Moor as we used to but would be very sad to see problems raised for those, the majority, who use and love it. Good luck to those who are prepared to take it on but Muddypuddles Point 2 is very valid. Speaking personally I know I would rather be out caching than sitting in front of a screen!Westwoods 2BlockedJust a thought on Trackables,I can’t get too excited about them personally but I know they give a lot of enjoyment to many and each to his own, however is it just me or are there a lot of missing bugs which are supposed to be in caches but aren’t?
Westwoods 2BlockedWe also found the King yesterday, been wanting to do this for a while and well worth it! The Log Ness Monster is still the all time favourite Kidicarus cache but this is well up there!
Westwoods 2BlockedMust agree with many of the comments on here.As we have 3 circular walks out at the moment I do understand people making quick TFTC comments, but I do look forward to receiving constructive comments ether positive or negative. There are also some cachers out there who go out of their way to make their comments interesting or amusing and they are especially welcome as they make placing the caches worthwhile-take a bow Phil of the Bogtrotters and the Master of Disaster the Bradfordgull, along with others who make opening the emails a pleasure rather than a chore.
Westwoods 2BlockedPerhaps we should all go out en masse, spread out and scour the area?
Westwoods 2BlockedAs stated NT properties have been sponsored by Garmin, but they don’t necessarily push caches on their land. I have been corresponding with them about a walk I was planning since April but after some initial enthusiasm all has now been quiet for some months and I have given up.
I would certainly agree with Dave’s comments on TB’s etc. although having found the Drogo caches I can’t see many first timers having the stamina to find them!Westwoods 2BlockedAlthough we don’t get to the Moor as we once did have no hesitation in being part of this site.Like the adopt a cache idea.
